It’s going to take a lot of hard work for freelance designers, developers and writers to succeed in 2009. It can be done though, with effort and smart planning. Here are some tips and resources for how to prosper as a freelancer in the new year.
Strategic Business Plan
1. Writing The Plan – If you want to earn a good amount of money next year, you are going to need to start with a foundation, a plan. Before the year even starts, write out a well structured and smart business plan. What does this mean? Well, first look at how you’re going to make your income. Put the things you really need first, then the items that you want at the end. You can get to those items you want if you earn enough money. (more…)

I am sure everyone has heard this before: choose your work because you love it and not for the money. It’s completely, one hundred percent true–especially in design. Design is more than a job, it’s a passion. If you don’t like it, then you should just stop. Here’s my take on the subject:

1. If You Like it, You Will Be Successful
Seriously. The more passionate of a designer you are the better your work will be. Look at all of the top designers. They are so successful and their work is so good for one reason. They love what they do. They put all their effort into it not to make money, but for the passion. If you love what you do you will be successful.

A lot of highly creative designers have one big problem: perfectionism. Especially in design, seeking perfection is both unproductive and pointless. Why? If you spend all of your time trying to get your work exactly the way you envision it, you’re just wasting your time. For the most part, your final piece will be different from your original idea. Trying to focus on elements of your work that aren’t perfect is a bad way of working.

Here are a few tips/things to keep in mind to help you to stop your urge to be perfect:
1. Ask Other People’s Opinion
If you think your work isn’t perfect, you have to look at it in a different way. The best tactic for doing this is through other people. Go ask some other people what they think of your work. Take their advice or criticism into consideration. (more…)
