great list, i would suggest some open source alternatives that are inexpensive and coders can set them up for themselves. ProjectPier is similar to basecamp and open source. vTiger CRM can do invoices and manage your clients. and Toggl is a free online time tracker, what else do you need for free.

Appreciate the list! Some great apps on here…I appreciate the inclusion of some of the simple ones like Excel. That really works for people. I’ve been looking for the perfect Time Tracking app for years, currently using iClockr but it’s not perfect. Maybe I’ll try Freckle.

Another great project management application to check out is Intervals. It was built and is used by a web design and development agency and has lower priced plans aimed at freelancers.

I’ve been using Xpenser for time and expense tracking with good luck. You can submit expenses and timers using email, sms, twitter, and a number of other things. I’ve been using their IM bot with GTalk/Gmail, makes it very easy to track time. Also exports to FreshBooks.

Some time tracking software you might like to consider for your next article is 1DayLater 1DayLater activity tracking software – it’s useful for freelancers and other solo professionals – and allows you to track anything from time to money to mileage.

I use Protime for all my hour tracking. See http://www.protime.nl for more information (Dutch, but available in multiple languages)

I’d like to add Wrike (www.wrike.com) to the list. If you’re looking to organize your task, projects, files and discussions, then our system is the way to go. There’s a free version available, which might be especially appealing for freelancers.
